Edible British Creatures

The British Isles are teeming with delicious creatures to eat in ‘season’. Venison, game, fish, salmon, trout, fresh kippers, grouse and pheasant are just a few of them.

In Wales you may find welshcakes and live Leekies on your plate, in Scotland the spicy Haggis has been hunted almost to extinction, whilst in Ulster you can still fish for pickled Lepracockles. But in England, now that Spring is here, the ‘Crumpet hunting season’ has begun.

Little round spotty critters with 6 legs, Crumpets are an English delicacy, and are caught during the open hunting season of February to May. In the north they call them Pikelets. They are best lightly toasted, then smothered with fresh English butter and a smidgeon of 'Marmite' – delicious!

Well, I Never Did!

Where is the centre of England? A survey in 2002 by Ordnance Survey pinpointed Lindley Hall Farm, near Fenny Drayton, Leicestershire, as being at the centre of England. Historically, Meriden in the west Midlands claimed this title.

EASTER ～ 2010

'Easter' is the most important celebration in the Christian calendar, and is celebrated in March or April; this year is in April. The writer of the Book of Luke (to be found in the New Testament of the Holy Bible) explains in detail the entire account (chapter 19, verse 28 onwards).

'Palm Sunday' recalls how Jesus began His last journey to Jerusalem; it is the beginning of 'Holy Week', the time preceding Easter, when we remember the 'passion' of Jesus Christ, and how He prepared for His sacrificial death.

'Good Friday' is the day when we remember how Jesus, a perfectly innocent man, was horribly executed on a cross by the Roman Army, who occupied the land of Jesus' birth. After He died, He was taken down and placed in a stone cave tomb. It is a sad day (traditionally we bake cakes with a cross on them - you may see them for sale - 'hot cross buns').

As He had prophesied, on the third day He rose again to life - that day is celebrated with much happiness on 'Easter Sunday'. Because Almighty God raised Jesus to life, Christians have assurance that when we eventually die - as we all must - then the spirits of those who accept and follow Jesus as their Lord and Saviour will also be 'raised', and we shall live eternally with God in Heaven.

Many people take the opportunity at Easter-time to send greeting cards to friends and family. We also enjoy chocolate eggs and, because it's Springtime, the cards often feature flowers and rabbits (however, cards, eggs, rabbits etc. have nothing to do with the real celebration of Easter). ‘Good Friday’, and the Monday following Easter Sunday, are public holidays in the UK.

Christians believe Jesus was conceived by Almighty God and born of an ordinary young woman, Mary, who was a virgin. He is therefore both man and God, divine and perfect in every way; the Son of God.

His death was foretold through the ages and was intended to be a sacrificial 'payment' for all who would believe in Him. A 'payment' that allows us to go to Heaven, to the presence of our Holy God. Heis the Creator of all things; the world and all that is in it (including you and me), and the entire universe! Jesus Christ opens wide His arms of love to all who come to Him, men and women of all races, ages, cultures and backgrounds.

It is an exciting and wonderful story. But it’s more than just a story - it is reality!

This Easter-time, do feel free to join in worship of the Risen Lord Jesus at a Christian church near you (the volunteers at OPEN-HOUSE will be delighted to advise you where to go, or invite you to join them at their churches).

A simile is a comparison between two things and always uses the words ‘as’ or ‘like’. For example; ‘my love is like a red, red rose’.

A metaphor makes the comparison between two things directly. For example; ‘my love is a red, red rose’.

Similies and metaphors are poetic devices used in literature for richness of understanding and effect.

An analogy is a comparison used to explain a similarity of features between two things. For example; ‘…. such as the working of the heart and the working of a pump’.

better known as ‘Pigs Trotters’

160 mins Serves 4

Ingredients:

4 Brined Pigs Trotters / 1 Large Carrot, cut into chunks

1 Onion, quartered / 1 Bay Leaf

4 Sprigs Thyme / Salt and Black Pepper

Instructions:-

1. Wash the trotters well and place in a large saucepan

together with the carrot, onions, herbs, salt and pepper.

2. Cover with cold water, bring to the boil then reduce the heat

and simmer for 2-1/2 hours until very soft.

3. To serve –

Hot - lift out of the liquor and serve with soda bread.

Cold - cover and leave to cool in the liquor which will set to jelly.

Why is it that since Roman times, many British coins have depicted 'Britannia' as a warrior seated on a rock?
A >

The name was first recorded by the Greek merchant-explorer 'Pytheas of Massilia' who had circumnavigated Britain some time between 330 and 320 BC. He recorded the local name of the islands in Greek as Prettanika (which Greek historian Diodorus later rendered Pretannia, and the Romans, Britannia).

Pytheas was a celebrated Greek navigator who sailed from Massilia (Marseilles) in Gaul, and lived in the time of Alexandra the Great (356-323 BC). In his first famous voyage he sailed around Britain, reaching Thule (possibly the Shetlands) six days after leaving the northern coast of Britain, and on to Denmark. He is also known to have explored the coasts of western Europe from Cadiz to the Elbe.

Thule is the name given by both Greeks and Romans for the most northerly land known to them, having been originally used by the explorer Pytheas to refer to land he had discovered.

So, long before the Roman Caesar's first invasion of these islands in 55 BC, the Romans knew them by the name 'Britannia'. Britannia seated on a rock may signify Britain as an island, and she was often depicted above the waves, signifying the Roman idea of Britain as being at the edge of the known world. The personification of the country as the goddess Britannia dates from the time of the Roman Emperor Hadrian (76-133 BC), her image first appearing on a Roman coin in about the year AD 119.

It is likely that Britannia was based partly on Brigantia, a version of the Great Mother Brigit, goddess of the Celtic Brigantes, as well as the Roman goddess, Minerva. She appears on Hadrian-era coins throughout the Roman Empire, often seated on her cuirass and shield, or a throne, in a pose similar to Britannia. Some images of Britannia on Hadrian's coins are quite aggressive; the coins probably commemorating the warfare that led to the construction of Hadrian's Wall in northern England.

Next week, Thursday, 5th November, is ‘Bonfire Night’, when we celebrate the defeat of Guy Fawkes and his gang who had planned to explode dynamite under Parliament and kill nearly 300 people. Fawkes was a political terrorist who, in 1605, planned to destroy the Houses of Parliament and install an RC government. The ‘Gunpowder Plot’ was discovered, and he and his fellow plotters were punished for treason. Ever since then Britons have celebrated our freedom in an evening of fireworks, bonfires, baked potatoes and fun. Will there be a firework display at the University?

We’re Back!! ~ International OPEN-HOUSE meets again next Sunday afternoon, 2nd August, from 2pm until 4pm – will you be there? TheLounge, Emmanuel Church Centre, 43 Forest Road, Loughborough.

We all enjoyed the Garden Party on Saturday 18th, so ‘Thanks’ to Allenand Joan + the ‘Ambassadors’ for organizing it. And three carloads of us had a lovely day out at Newstead Abbey last Saturday. Hello Friends,

On Sunday, 28th June, ‘OPEN-HOUSE’ meets in the Emmanuel Church
‘Lounge’ from 2.00 pm until 4.00 pm (14.00 - 16.00).

After OPEN-HOUSE, you are all invited, at 4pm, to listen to the ‘Children’s
Choir Concert’ in Emmanuel Church – this will be followed at 5pm with a ‘bring-your-own’ Picnic outside on the grass. What a lovely way to end the month!

Please remember –
during JULY there will not be any Sunday afaternoon meetings of ‘OPEN-HOUSE’ – but keep in touch because we hope to organise other events during the month.
Sunday afternoon meetings will begin again in August.

Its always good to hear from old friends who have returned to their far-away homes! Both our 2 friends have recently e-mailed us; they are well and adjusting to busy lives in China. Our thoughts and prayers are also with other old friends who live in more troubled
parts of the world, and we trust they will know security and peace in the midst of social and political upheaval.

Hello Friends,

On Sunday, 14th June, ‘OPEN-HOUSE’ will meet in the Emmanuel Church ‘Lounge’ from 2.00 pm until 4.00 pm (14.00 - 16.00). Sunday is also the University’s Centenary Open Day, from 12pm until 5pm – so there’s plenty of time to come to ‘Open-House’ for a cup of tea and to meet your friends!

Summer is the season when many of you will be traveling on holiday. As in every other country in the world, please take care of your security! Never put cameras, passports, cards, tickets or money into a backpack – thieves and pickpockets are capable of stealing your possessions out of a backpack, and you will not even feel them. Be discreet with valuables, and keep them where you can see them, or in a secure waist-bag in front of you. If ever you feel threatened always find a policeman – they are there to help you.

Monday 13th is a Public Holiday. Would you like to join us for a WALK? We plan to go through the Outwoods to Beacon Hill - across to Broombriggs Farm (where we shall eat our picnic) - on to Woodhouse Eaves (and a cup of tea at No 11) - then back by different paths to where we began.

Bring with you:- strong walking shoes, a warm jacket in case it is cold or wet, camera, food and drink for your picnic (and a plastic bag to sit on if the field is wet) ~ you can put them all in a lightweight back-pack with your umbrella and hat etc!!!

On Sunday 12th we celebrate Jesus Christ’s glorious resurrection (rising from the dead) on the ‘third day’ ~ Easter Sunday is really the most wonderful of all Christian celebrations. Some of us begin the day by going to the top of Beacon Hill for a SONRISE SERVICE at 6.30 am. If you’d like to join us (the sun rising in the east can be most spectacular) then do come - the Chinese Christian Fellowship will walk there (meet at the Uni Library at 4.15 am); Aaron has more details (ansteya@yahoo,co.uk). And of course you you are welcome to celebrate Easter at Emmanuel Church, King’s Church, Sunday Family Fellowship, Beacon Fellowship, All Saints Church Thorpe Acre, Holywell Church, Elim Church.

Hello Friends,

We all had a wonderfully enjoyable afternoon last Sunday, and I’d like to thank Sirupa and Atul Patel for bringing so many saris for the girls to dress up in (have you seen the pictures?); also for bringing food to add to the 'OPEN-HOUSE’ table – and for teaching us the stick-dance and bhangra! We must do it again. I lost count of how many came, but it was over 50, although not all are in the group picture. Wow, doesn’t time fly – tomorrow is the first day of January, 2009 – so we’d like to wish you all a very ~
Happy New Year.

The next meeting of 'OPEN-HOUSE’, on Sunday, 4th January, will be in the Emmanuel Church ‘Centre’ from 2.00pm until 4.00pm (14.00 - 16.00). It will be a very special time, because our good friend Sirupa Patel is coming with some friends, bringing lots of colourful Indian clothes for us all to try on – yes, men as well as ladies! So do come along – it will be great fun – and bring your camera!

Judith and I went for a lovely walk on Boxing Day – the weather was sunny and crisp, and it was such a pleasure to see the newly ploughed fields, and birds swooping in the air; what did you all do over the Christmas holiday – do come and tell us on Sunday, and bring some photos with you.

Thursday (tomorrow) is New Years Day which I’m sure many of you will celebrate in some way. And the ’12 Days of Christmas’ ends on January 6th (Epiphany), when all the decoration and tinsel is taken down.

Hello Friends,

During the morning of Sunday, 9th November, Remembrance Sunday, there will be a solemn Military Ceremony in Queens Park. You may wish to attend as a spectator or, like myself, to remember with gratitude those who have given their lives so that you and I may enjoy freedom. Find a place soon after 10 am (where you can see the front of the Carillon Tower.

We hope to see you at 'OPEN-HOUSE’ next Sunday, 9th November – we meet in the Emmanuel Church ‘Lounge’ from 2pm until 4pm (14.00 - 16.00).

The ‘Town Fair’ will be held in the town centre from Wednesday, 12th Nov to Saturday, 15th Nov. The Fair used to be held every St Peter’s Day and has a Charter granted by King Henry 3rd dated 1221 – it has been held almost every year since then, 787 years ago. Of course, it has changed over the years and is now all entertainment. Have fun, but beware of pickpockets, so keep your valuables safe!

Hello Everyone,

The helpers are having a short Summer break; so the next 'Open-House' will be on Sunday 3rd August, although we shall be arranging other events during July - so ‘watch this space’.

Our thanks to Bryan and Marion for providing ‘strawberries and cream’ last Sunday – the delicious tea made up for getting wet whilst we walked to their home. I guess we all had a very happy afternoon!

A large group of us are going to Belvoir Castle next Saturday – my apologies to those we could not find seats for. We’ll try to arrange another day out, later in the summer.

Summer Holiday!

Hello Friends,

Ahhhh - Summer is with us at last. Years ago most British families went to seaside towns for a Summer holiday, and I have many memories of playing on the sand, splashing in the North Sea (very chilly!) and fishing for crabs at the end of Lowestoft Pier.

Our international gathering included people from Austria, China, Spain, South Korea, Iran, UK, India, Japan ~ isn't it wonderful having friends from around the world.

Many of you will be travelling around the UK and Europe during the next few weeks. Open-House will continue every Sunday at 2pm, but we hope those of you who are absent will have lovely holidays. If you know of a 'visitor' to the UK from another nation, please bring them along on Sunday afternoon, we'd love to meet them.

Some of you are returning home for good after your time in the UK. Please let me know, so that I can delete your name and e-mail address from the Open-House Contact List - the list is very long and I don't want to send e-mail letters to those who are no longer here!

Monday, 23rd April - Saint George's Day - The national day of England. St. George is the 'patron saint' of England. Born in Turkey in the 3rd century, he was a brave Roman soldier. Whilst in England he heard that the Roman Emperor was executing Christians, so he travelled to Rome to plead for their freedom; his protest ending in his own death. A story that first appeared in the 6th century tells of St. George rescuing a fair maiden by slaying a fearsome fire-breathing dragon, although less is known of his other feats. The saint's name was shouted as a battle cry by English Knights who fought beneath the red-cross banner of St. George during the Hundred Years War (1338-1453). This is immortalised in Shakespeare's play Henry V in the lines: "I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips, straining upon the start. The game's afoot: follow your spirit; and, upon this charge cry "God for Harry! England and Saint George!". A national feast in his honour was created in 1415. The English national flag is a wide red cross on a white background, and the national flower is a red & white rose. This day is also said to be the birthday of William Shakespeare in 1564.

International 'OPEN HOUSE' - Loughborough can be a very lonely place for people from overseas, and ‘Open House’, helps to ease friendships between people of different cultures and nations; our 'mission statement' being "a place where people from overseas can be loved and accepted, and where they can make friends in a safe environment". We pray that 'Open House' will facilitate interaction between people of different cultures, to the mutual benefit of all ~ especially that those who have never had the opportunity of even hearing about Him, may be introduced to our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. What better example of friendship evangelism could one ask for!

Meeting in the Emmanuel Church 'Lounge' most Sundays from 2pm to 4pm, we provide light refreshments, and overseas students, academics and other visitors to Loughborough are encouraged to relax, chat, play board-games etc. Occasionally we arrange quizzes, outings, etc.

‘Open House’ is served, on a rota basis, by a very small group of volunteers from local churches, however as the number of visitors is growing week by week we welcome other mature Christian men and women to join us in this delightful ministry.

'Open House' begins again in the New Year on Sunday, 7th January, from 2pm - 4pm, at the Emmanuel Church Centre in Forest Road. We trust you will all have a very blessed Christmas and a happy New Year.

There are many Christmas services in local churches to which you are invited - all are listed in the December 15th edition of the Loughborough ECHO newspaper.

Kings Church - 6.30pm - Carols by Candlelight

'Carols by Candlelight' at Kings Church is a candle-lit evening of carols and the Christmas story, followed by mulled wine and mince pies, and many of the 'Open House' group will be there.

There will not be an 'Open House' at Emmanuel Church on Sunday, 17th December!

BUT

We have been invited by the good people at Thorpe Acre Church to join them for their Traditional Christmas Lunch on that day.

Sunday, 17th December @ 1pm
Thorpe Acre Church Hall, Thorpe Acre Road

Turkey with roast potatoes and stuffing etc, with Crackers, and followed by Christmas Pudding.
There will then be games in the afternoon, and we have been invited to stay on for the Christmas Carol Service at 6.30 in the Church.

It would be helpful if you would make your own way to Thorpe Acre Church (up Epinal Way, turn left along Knighthorpe Road, and then right into Thorpe Acre Road - and the Church is on your right). For those who really cannot walk there, Bryan and I will try to collect you from Emmanuel Church Hall at 12.45pm.

Please confirm by Sunday 10th whether you wish to come, so that the caterers can make adequate arrangements; either in person at Open House on Sunday 10th, or by e-mail to me.

Open House will be inside the church area by the kitchen (not in the individual hall).

We have met here 2 or 3 times - if you haven't been to this place before, walk up Forest Road from the university until you see the big church, walk to the main glass doors, enter, turn to the right, go through 2 more glass doors then on the left is the kitchen and seating area where you will see us.
